Variety description

 

The yuzu is most likely a cross between Citrus ichangensis (Ichang papeda or lemon) and Citrus reticulata (Mediterranean mandarin). The yuzu has obviously inherited its good cold tolerance from the Ichang papeda. The yuzu is not as hardy as the bitter orange. It should therefore only be planted in mild locations. However, its relative winter hardiness, coupled with its complex, slightly bitter, very intense lemon flavour, makes it a very interesting citrus plant that enjoys great popularity, especially in Japan.
The yuzu has strikingly narrowly pointed, clearly visible winged foliage and has thorns. Thanks to its frost tolerance to about -10°C, it is also used as a rootstock for various other citrus.
