Variety description

The black chokeberry 'Viking' is a beautiful and high-yielding shrub. The variety resembles 'Rubin'. The white flowers, which appear in flat umbels, are somewhat reminiscent of small apple blossoms. However, the anthers are much larger and they are attached to long stamens. Seen from above, the crimson anthers are symmetrically distributed over the white petals, which looks very attractive. Apparently not only for us humans, many insects love the flowers of the chokeberry, the shrub is considered a very good bee pasture.
From late summer onwards, the increasingly dark berries adorn the shrub. They are full of vitamins, anthocyanins and polyphenols. These ingredients are said to have vitalising, antioxidant and antibacterial effects. After harvesting the healthy berries, the undemanding shrub turns a final flush of orange-red colour in October and November."
