Variety description

Plant once - harvest (almost) forever! This motto is especially true for horseradish...The robust, hardy perennial forms basal leaf rosettes with lanceolate leaves. It probably originated in south-eastern Europe and can now be found growing wild all over central Europe. This is no coincidence: before pepper became known in this region, horseradish was very popular for seasoning dishes, especially in Franconia. Today, horseradish, as it is also called, has largely disappeared from our gardens; only in Bavaria is it still quite common. All the more reason for us to take on this extremely grateful plant with its bitingly pungent taste.

The cultivation of horseradish is very simple. Since it quickly takes up a large area in the garden, cultivation in large pots is an interesting alternative. 'Charlemagne' is a Lubera Edibles selection which, thanks to vitalisation via micropropagation, is much more vigorous than commercial horseradish. This pays off especially in pot cultivation. However, it should be noted that horseradish prefers humus-rich and rather moist conditions. By the way, pot cultivation is absolutely no problem even in the winter. The plant can withstand temperatures down to about -30°C.
