Variety description

The tree kale 'Daubenton's Green' is a perennial, hardy cabbage that takes on a tree-like form over the years. Somewhat misleading, admittedly, because in terms of size the term "shrub cabbage", which is also sometimes used, is probably more correct. The tree kale does not form a head, but a veritable forest of leaves. One of the peculiarities of the tree kale is that it does not form flowers even after years. Apparently it just doesn't want to, but it really shoots up. Fortunately, there is a simple trick to calm its growth: harvest it! The tree kale 'Daubenton's Green' is frost hardy down to about -15°C. It can live to about 10 years. Without pruning it grows about 150 cm high; with regular pruning it grows wider and bushier. Tree kale should be planted deep. It can cope with a variety of soils, but poor sites should be enriched with a little compost. The leaves of tree kale can be enjoyed fresh or cooked. They are particularly suitable in salads, soups and vegetable dishes. Larger leaves can also be used as wraps.
