Variety description

The Ichang papeda comes from the Chinese highlands and grows there at altitudes of up to 2,400 metres above sea level. As a veritable ""mountain climber"" among the citrus plants, it can tolerate lower temperatures than all other citrus plants, down to about -15°C. This makes it the only edible citrus that is recommended for outdoor cultivation. In terms of taste, however, the yuzu is much more interesting.
Ichang papedas grow quite densely and compactly. The green foliage is clearly winged. This citrus reaches a maximum height of 2 m in a container and 2-3 m when planted out.
Since the Ichang papeda starts to sprout earlier in the spring, it is advisable to protect the plant lightly if late frost is imminent. Flowering time is in the spring; the quite large flowers are very intensely fragrant. The fruits lighten to yellow when ripe, have rather little juice, are very sour and rich in seeds. The aromatic skin is almost more interesting for cooking.
