Variety description

With the flowering rhubarb Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' we are breaking new ground. While people used to be annoyed by the emerging flowers and just cut them out as early as possible, Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' has been specially selected for flowers. This has been done, however, in connection with a good harvest. As a plant, Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' is relatively compact growing for a rhubarb. Due to more compact foliage and tendentially shorter leaf stalks, Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' is only about 2/3 as large as a plant as standard varieties. This also applies to the flowering shoots. The flowers are only about 150 cm high, making Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' also a beautiful flowering perennial.

The harvest of Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' begins in early spring, when the first leaves have fully unfolded. Depending on the location and weather conditions, this can happen as early as the beginning of April. Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' is harvested until the end of June, like a typical spring rhubarb. From May onwards the flowers develop, which have a very high ornamental value. Rhubarb flowers are surprisingly beautiful if you leave them alone. When the inflorescences have dried and the seeds begin to turn brown, the flower shoots and seeds should be removed.

Due to the oxalic acid it contains, rhubarb should not be consumed raw or only in extremely small quantities. When cooked and added with a little sugar, Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' develops its full flavor potential. Bloombarber® 'Blitzstart®' tastes very good with an intense and fruity rhubarb aroma, rounded off with a tangy but not unpleasant acidity.
