Variety description

Blautropf'® is a very unusual blueberry with ornamental value. It comes from the Azores, botanically it is Vaccinium cylindraceum. The compact-growing rarity hardly exceeds 50 cm, branches well and is evergreen. It is suitable as a container plant or for the bog bed, for example as an underplanting for other, taller blueberries. 'Blautropf'® requires a sunny to partially shaded location. The substrate should be well drained and acidic. Waterlogging is not tolerated. In harsh locations, light shelter or a shady location is recommended in winter. The elongated little bell-shaped flowers hang tightly packed on panicles. Depending on exposure, they are green-whitish to slightly orange and appear from May. The plant flowers and bears fruit at the same time. The fruits are elongated drop-shaped, the harvest starts in mid-July to early August. The berries taste refreshingly sweet and sour. Thanks to its reddish shoots, pretty flowers, lush, blue berry clusters and great autumn colors, 'Blautropf'® is also an attractive ornamental plant.
