Variety description

Sea kale comes from the coastal areas of the North and Baltic Seas. It is robust, salt-tolerant and tough, which is why you can count on it for 6 - 10 years. Not only in terms of longevity, but also in terms of growth potential, sea kale is something special: it can reach a height of 70 cm. Flowering time is in May-June. During this time, the small white flowers conjure up a pretty veil over the strongly wavy, blue-green foliage. The plant moves in in late autumn. Similar to rhubarb, spring growth can be encouraged: in March, a large, dark pot is placed over the rootstock. Due to the heat and the lack of light underneath, the first stalks sprout as pale as asparagus. They even taste similar, which is why one also speaks of sea kale asparagus.

The plant should not be harvested in the first year so that it can grow vigorously and build up reserves. You can start in the 2nd year, from the 3rd year three harvests, each with around 30% of the leaf mass, are possible without significantly weakening the plant.
