Variety description

The bunching onion is also known as Welsh onion or spring onion. It is typical that instead of one large bulb, there is a real clump of shoots that can be harvested. The smaller onion is thus compensated for with a really large amount of usable leaf mass above ground. The winter bunching onion is undemanding and self-propagates around the clump by means of small bulbs. It flowers in June/July. The white flower umbels not only look beautiful, but are also very popular with various insects.
Why do we count the winter bunching onion as a perennial vegetable? Plant once, harvest for 10 years is not an exaggerated advertising claim, but the rule. Moreover, the plant can even be harvested throughout the entire growing season, provided you leave it enough leaves that its growth is not too badly affected.
The tubular leaves are good as a substitute for chives, the flowers as edible decoration and the bulbs for cooking. If that's not enough, the seeds can be harvested in July, ground if needed and used as a spice."
