Strawberry young plants – that WAS a gap in our range of berry plants. Historically, strawberry plants have mostly been produced by speciality farms (usually from commercial farming), but our goal is to enable many more farms to be able to produce their own strawberry plants by providing the right quality of young plants, and thus expanding their assortment of edibles (vegetables, fruits, other berries). And at the same time, we also want to offer varieties that meet the special needs of home gardeners (robust, tasty, simple).
Breeding and the quality of the young plants
The strawberry assortment, which we are offering for the first time and exclusively this year, differs from the competition in two decisive ways:
- First: our plants are micro-enhanced and are offered in small, easy-to-process plugs but also in our standard young plant tray. So, where you have been struggling with misshapen frigo plants and having to cut back roots, a small plug can easily be pushed into the final pot or tray – either by hand or fully automated.
- Secondly, the Lubera® strawberry varieties have been bred specifically for the home garden market – and they are not, as in most offers, waste products of crop cultivation or simply old varieties that are no longer cultivated as commercial crops and now deserve their “good-doing” in the backyard. The breeding goals regarding taste, resistance, simplicity and ornamental value, which are crucial for us and our breeding, are in the end quite different from those in the cultivation of crops, where the focus is mainly on colours, form, robustness, yield, shelf life, etc.
June-bearing strawberry varieties: fragrant, aromatic and extremely fruity
In the case of the June-bearing strawberry varieties, we can present two breeding lines: one is the Parfum series, which, in terms of breeding, combines the characteristics of very old strawberries with modern fruit properties and provides more strawberry aroma and fragrance. On the other hand, the Frutium® series, which includes modern strawberries, but which have been chosen against the selections for commercial cultivation with the main focus on flavour. The fruitiness of these varieties is very unique, which is ultimately based on a very high level of sugar and acid – therefore the series name Frutium®.
Frutium® Belleure® - An early to very early variety with dark red fruits that are completely coloured and have a fairly concentrated harvest window.
Frutium® Bonneure® - A medium early variety with large fruits that have a very fruity strawberry flavour. In addition, this variety has exceptionally healthy, shiny, dark green leaves.
Parfum Schweizerherz® - A medium early variety with large to very large fruits that taste sweet and aromatic; it has a fairly compact habit with healthy foliage.
Parfum Schweizerduft® - An early variety with large to very large fruits that have an intensely perfumed wild strawberry flavour; it is vigorous and has low soil requirements.
The best everbearing garden strawberry variety: Parfum Eternal Love (Ewigi Liebi®)
We are cautious with superlatives, but with Eternal Love (Ewigi Liebi®) we can really celebrate a breeding breakthrough, which leaves other everbearing, day-neutral strawberry varieties far behind regarding the fruit quality. There's just more sugar, more flavour, and the aftertaste is more tempting and calls for MORE scent of wild strawberry...
Parfum Eternal Love (Ewigi Liebi®) - A very early variety with medium-sized, dark red fruits, which are very sweet, aromatic and have a pronounced wild strawberry aroma. The plants have a compact habit and quickly form runners.
Everbearing balcony strawberries with ornamental value and fantastic fruits
Why should a strawberry plant not also be a beautiful ornamental plant? On the other hand, nothing speaks against it if the flavour or the taste does not fall short of expectations. By crossing wild strawberries, Fragaria vesca and F. vescana hybrids, the Lubera breeders have managed to breed an entire series of ornamental strawberries that happily develop the beautiful inflorescences above the leaves, which are extremely willing to bloom and they still develop super sweet and aromatic fruits. Parfum Fraisibelle® and Parfum Fraisonette® are particularly interesting for growing in pots or balcony boxes.
Parfum Fraisibelle® - A medium early variety with large, dark red and aromatic fruits, which have a slight perfumed note (wild strawberry flavour). The plants have a normal habit and are characterised by their healthy foliage. The flowering in summer and autumn is even stronger than in the spring! The flowers have a high ornamental value because they are located above the leaves.
Parfum Fraisonette® - An early variety with medium-sized, dark red fruits with an intense wild strawberry aroma and a slight acidity. The plants have a very bushy habit and healthy foliage. The flowers are arranged decoratively above the leaves, the spring bloom is gigantic, the summer and autumn yield is good, but somewhat weaker.
Hanging and climbing strawberries – with gourmet added value
In addition, we also offer long-lasting hanging and climbing strawberries. Parfum Freeclimber® and Parfum Freejumper® are – as the names imply – varieties that form runners extremely fast and then produce fruit on them right away; these are the right strawberry varieties for hanging baskets, “strawberry trees” with attached runners and wall plantings. Even using these strawberries as ground cover plants is possible.
Parfum Freejumper® - An early variety with dark red, sweet fruits that have a pronounced, perfumed aroma. The plants are vigorous and they are the fastest of all the varieties to form runners, which immediately bloom and fruit again.
Parfum Freeclimber® - A medium early variety with dark red, sweet, aromatic fruits. The plants are vigorous and healthy and they quickly form runners that bear fruit right away.
Last but not least: Wild strawberries
The wild strawberries are the last group that should not be missing in the assortment. Again, we are fortunate to offer a new selection of the well-known Alexandria variety. We have tested hundreds of seedlings in extensive trials (and found some striking differences within seedling-propagated plants) and then have launched this best yielding selection vegetatively into our micropropagation system. Here is the advantage: it is possible to uniformly and punctually produce abundant amounts of young plants that are freely scalable.
1A Alexandria - A wild strawberry with a large number of small but highly aromatic fruits. The plants are moderately vigorous and do not form runners. In contrast to the seed-propagated mother variety, the plants are vegetatively propagated, thereby one hundred per cent identical, more willing to bloom and more fertile than the parent variety.
The future: Double Pleasures®
Lubera's breeding pipeline is currently developing a new strawberry family, the Doubles Pleasures®, which consists of an entire series of red and pink-blooming strawberry varieties. In contrast to the well-known varieties on the market, these novelties are vegetatively propagated and are also offered as LE plugs. In addition, here for the first time, a focus is placed on the quality of the fruit with reference to the pink-blooming varieties, which will be equal to the garden varieties. Here, one additional supplement is allowed: the existing hybrid varieties in the pink-flowering range are largely produced and selected in the greenhouse; otherwise hybrid breeding of strawberries is not possible. At Lubera, the entire breeding process (the selection of the seedlings, the propagation of the selections, the test levels A, B and C) takes place in the field, without crop protection, which generally leads to a higher selection pressure and, as a result, to more robust varieties.
Strawberry plug plants (diameter) – the ultimate advantage for production companies
As mentioned, with the strawberry young plants from Lubera Edibles® the tedious potting of frigo young plants is a thing of the past; the pot performance with our plug plants is certainly three times larger than with frigos. It is also possible to process the plugs mechanically using robots. These technical advantages are all the more difficult when one considers that, at the same time as the young plants, one also obtains an exclusive variety concept which differentiates itself on the market.
When should strawberry plugs be potted?
Here is another concluding tip: the market for strawberry plants is tending more and more towards spring. The times when the actual strawberry season took place in the summer are definitely over. Thanks to the Lubera Edibles® young plants, this new seasonal challenge is an ideal response: the strawberries can easily be potted from June to August in order to have strong, saleable plants in the spring. Especially the production of larger pots, e.g. 9-12 cm, has proved successful, but also 4-, 6- and 10-cell trays can be easily produced with our strawberry young plants.
